Network Tomography

Dr. Nick Duffield, AT&T Labs-Research, Florham Park, New Jersey, USA

Abstract

Measurement underpins the effective management of communications networks.  But it is not feasible to measure some essential teletraffic and performance characteristics directly.  Network tomography solves this problem by correlating sets of composite measurements in order to statistically infer the required detail.  This talk covers two current applications: inferring network link performance from end-to-end measurements, and inferring network traffic matrices from aggregate traffic measurements.
