The Rince Institute: Home

Rince (/rin-keh/) is an Irish national research institute focussed on innovation in engineering technologies. It is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Computing at Dublin City University.  Within the Faculty, Rince researchers are primarily affiliated with the School of Electronic Engineering and the School of Computing.

The Institute is situated at the main entrance of Dublin City University, located in a recently constructed, state of the art building, which contains all the laboratories and facilities required to carry out leading edge research projects.

Recent News

  • The Rince Artificial Life Group is the lead partner for the EvoSym project, recently awarded funding from the European Complexity-NET network. The project will investigate the emergence and evolution of biological symbol systems. The other members of the pan-European project consortium are the Bioinformatics Group of Universiteit Utrecht (Netherlands), and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). The project is currently  accepting applications for postgraduate study scholarships (closing date: 30 July 2010).
  • Congratulations to Bogdan Ciubotaru, George Ghinea and Gabriel Muntean, whose paper "Objective Assessment of Region of Interest-Aware
    Adaptive Multimedia Streaming Quality
    ” has received the 2009 Best Paper of the Year Award from IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting!
  • Rince's Centre for Image Processing and Analysis (CIPA) has recently announced the licensing of its breakthrough Computer Aided Detection (CAD) technology to Biotronics3D, a London-based company, active in the research, development and marketing of advanced, image-based medical diagnostic devices.   • Rince Director, Barry McMullin, gave a presentation on the Institute's activities to DCU Governing Authority on 15 April 2010.  The presentation slides are now available in various formats.
  • The Rince Institute is participating in the John P. Holland Scholarship Programme 2010. This program offers opportunities for DCU undergraduate students to participate in active research projects within any of the Rince research centres and labs. (Closing date for applications: 9th April 2010)

    Prof. Barry McMullin has been appointed as the new Director of the Rince Institute for a three year term beginning February 2010.

  • Congratulations to Dr. Hrishikesh Venkataraman and Dr. Gabriel-Miro Muntean who were awarded the best paper award at The World Congress on Engineering and Computer Science (WCECS2009), in San Francisco on  for their joint paper: H. Venkataraman, S. Agrawal, A. Maheshwari and G.M. Muntean, “Quality-Controlled Prioritized Adaptive Multimedia Transmission in WiMAX-based Cellular Networks”
  • Congratulations to Dr. Dahai Yu & Dr. Ovidiu Ghita who were awaded "Best Paper" during the 3rd Pacific-Rim Symposium on Image and Video Technology (PSIVT2009), in Japan for their paper "A Novel Visual Speech Representation and HMM Classification for Visual Speech Recognition".
  • A successful 2008 China-Ireland International Conference on Information and Communications Technologies (CIICT 2008) was held in Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) on 26-28 September. This year the conference was addressed by the Irish Ambassador to China, H.E. Declan Kelleher, and involved plenty of participation from both Ireland and China. (more)
  • Dr. Gabriel-Miro Muntean is joint editor of the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society September 2008 Special issue: Quality Issues on Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting. (more)
  • A successful and enjoyable Rince Research Away Day took place in the Deer Park Hotel in Howth on the 18th of September. The day consisted of a broad range of talks and posters, given by Principal Investigators, postdoctoral researchers and research students from the various research groups within RINCE. (photo)

    Patricia Moore (Centre for Image Processing and Analysis [CIPA]) - Rince

    Congratulations to Patricia Moore (Centre for Image Processing and Analysis [CIPA] www.cipa.dcu.ie ) on being awarded a Google Europe Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship 2008. Patricia was one of 20 talented young women selected from 295 students in 157 different universities across 31 European countries who applied for the 2008 award. (more)
